Sewing, knitting and crochet...
The handicrafts of sewing, knitting and crochet form a trio of textile disciplines which, while each having their own techniques and tools, also share commonalities.
They involve the manipulation of yarn to create garments, accessories or decorative objects, offer countless possibilities for creation and personalization, and each piece can be unique, reflecting the style and preferences of the craftsman.
Each craft requires mastery of basic techniques. For sewing, these are sewing stitches, for knitting, basic stitches such as the moss stitch, and for crochet, stitches such as the tight stitch. Threads and needles, or hooks, are indispensable in these crafts. Materials can vary depending on the project, from cotton to wool to synthetic fibers. There are, however, a few differences between these disciplines.
The main sewing tools are the sewing machine, sewing needles, pins, scissors and sewing patterns. Sewing mainly involves joining pieces of fabric together. Techniques include sewing by hand or machine, attaching buttons and zippers, and making clips. It is used to make garments, modify existing garments, and create household items such as curtains and cushions.
Knitting requires knitting needles and various types of yarn. It relies on the interweaving of loops of yarn called stitches. Basic stitches include moss stitch, stockinette stitch and twist patterns. It is often used to create warm garments such as sweaters, scarves and socks, as well as blankets and accessories.
Crochet uses a single hook and thread, often thicker than that used for knitting. It is characterized by stitches formed with the hook. Basic stitches include tight stitch, half-bride and bridle. Crochet can be used to create doilies, amigurumis (small figurines), bags and decorative accessories.
In Côte d'Ivoire, these crafts are learned in community workshops or by family members. Sewing is particularly popular for making traditional boubous and modern outfits. Knitting and crocheting, meanwhile, are used to make a variety of decorative objects, garments and accessories.
Each of these crafts has its own unique techniques and applications. They enable artisans to express themselves through varied and original textile creations, each discipline bringing its own touch of magic to textile craftsmanship.
